The Ancient Quiver Tree Forest
Description
A striking landscape photograph of the Quiver Tree Forest (Kokerboom Woud) near Keetmanshoop in southern Namibia. The image captures the unique, dichotomous branching of the Aloe dichotoma, which are technically large succulents rather than true trees. Their thick, golden-scaled bark and smooth, yellow branches are shown reaching toward a stark blue sky, standing as ancient sentinels among a chaotic jumble of massive black dolerite boulders. These "trees" can live for over 300 years and are deeply woven into local history; their name comes from the San people, who would hollow out the soft, fibrous branches to create lightweight quivers for their arrows. The forest is a declared National Monument and a haven for photographers, particularly during the "golden hours" when the textured bark appears to glow with a metallic, amber light.
