Puku Breeding Herd – Nambwa, Bwabwata National Park

Description

A wonderful wildlife photograph capturing a breeding herd of Puku grazing in the lush, emerald-green floodplains of the Kwando River within the Nambwa Concession. These golden-brown antelopes are water-dependent and are frequently seen in the marshy grasslands and dambos of the Bwabwata National Park. The image features a group of females and their young, easily identified by their shaggy coats and the lack of horns (which are only carried by the males). Accompanying the herd is a Cattle Egret, a common symbiotic partner that hitches a ride or stalks alongside the grazers to feast on insects stirred up from the grass. This shot highlights the rich, riverine biodiversity of the Zambezi Region, where the Puku finds one of its last remaining strongholds in Namibia.
