Roadside Ilala Palm near Rundu

Description

A tall, solitary Ilala Palm (Makalani Palm) stands as a prominent silhouette against a vast, clear sky along the road near Rundu in the Kavango West region. This indigenous fan palm is easily identified by its distinctive bulge in the center of its trunk and its large, grey-green fronds. The surrounding landscape features the sandy soils and sparse scrub typical of the Kalahari woodlands that border the Okavango River valley. These palms are culturally and economically vital to the local communities; the hard, white seeds (known as "vegetable ivory") are carved into intricate buttons and curios, while the sap is traditionally harvested and fermented to produce "palm wine
